Abstract:From the Tang to the Ming dynasties, the overall trend of deer antlers and Pere david's Deer antlers under the materia medica records has changed from a mere comparison of their strengths and weaknesses to a differentiation of their functions, based on the method of judging the difference in efficacy by the time of shedding the antlers in Yueling. The confusion after the Ming dynasty was mostly over the origin of the species,as the Mi in the ancient texts is the modern Pere David's deer, and the sika deer is referred to in historical records as deer and spotted dragon,or as the deer of Mulan or the Mi of Jilin, and has only been named sika deer since the Qing dynasty. The reasons for the confusion between deer and Pere David's deer in terms of medicinal effects and biology are elucidated through a review and discussion of the historical records. The content of the textual study provides a theoretical basis for tracing deer antler back to its origins.
