Analysis of ‘Tou Tong’ and ‘Tou Teng’ in TCM

Abstract:Head pain,a common disease,the workers of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)and western medicine hold different concept of it.In area of TCM,the words "head pain" and "head ache" are used in mass,that is not beneficial for diagnosis and treatment.Consulting the medical books from Moxibustion Canon of Eleven Channels of Yinyang System to TCM Internal Medicine,we discuss in aspect of names,parts of body,characteristic and name evolution.Come to conclusion that "Head pain" has been a disease name in the period of Inner Canon of Huangdi;" Head pain" has wider implication in TCM area than in western medicine,containing " cephalalgia" and " prosopodynia" from western medicine;"Head pain" has various acompanied symptoms,and some special disease with headache should be in concern;The words "pain" and "ache" are in different meaning and using.There is a certain historical evolution from "head pain"to "head ache",and "head pain" is better to be disease name than "head ache".
