Historical Origin and Latest Taxonomic System of Dermatophytes
Abstract:In the past decade, the classification and nomenclature of dermatophytes have undergone significant changes. Combining traditional phenotypic and physiological biochemical characteristics with molecular biology methods based on nucleotide and amino acid sequences, the original three-classification system (Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton) has been changed into the current seven-classification system: Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton, Nanizia, Paracoccidioides, Tinea, and Cutaneotrichophyton. This article traces the historical evolution of dermatophytes and introduces the latest classification system to enhance clinical understanding of dermatophytes.
