The Defensive and Tissue-Damaging Roles of Neutrophils in Cutaneous Fungal Infections
Abstract:Neutrophils, as a core component of the innate immune system, play a key role in responding to various pathogens, especially cutaneous fungal infections. However, recent studies have found that neutrophils may also cause damage to the body while defending against fungi. Therefore, this article reviews the mechanisms of neutrophil action in cutaneous fungal infections, including their recognition and phagocytic functions, oxidative respiratory burst, and formation of extracellular traps. It discusses the dual roles of neutrophils in defense and tissue damage during cutaneous fungal infections, and also proposes future research directions and challenges.
