Research Progress on the Epidemiology of Onychomycosis in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Abstract:Metabolic disorders and impaired immune function in patients with type 2 diabetes lead to an increased incidence of superficial fungal infections, among which onychomycosis is particularly important to prevent and treat, as it may cause serious complications and impose a significant public health burden on patients and society. This article reviews the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of onychomycosis in patients with type 2 diabetes in recent years. It was found that onychomycosis in patients with type 2 diabetes is more common in elderly patients with a long disease course. The causative fungi are still mainly dermatophytes (80%), but the proportion of Candida infections and other non-traditional pathogenic fungi (such as certain yeasts or molds) has also been gradually increasing. This review provides a scientific reference for the prevention and treatment of onychomycosis in patients with type 2 diabetes and for future research.
