Efficacy Observation of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fractional Laser in the Treatment of Onychomycosis
Abstract:Objective To investigate the safety and efficacy of carbon dioxide (CO2) fractional laser in the treatment of onychomycosis. Methods Patients with onychomycosis from the dermatology outpatient department of Shanghai Pudong New Area Gongli Hospital were randomly recruited and received CO2 fractional laser treatment. Fungal examinations were performed before treatment, at the end of treatment, and 3 months after treatment. Clinical assessment of the affected nail area was also conducted to observe clinical efficacy and adverse reactions. Results The affected nail area before treatment, at the end of treatment, and 3 months after treatment were (72.66±23.22)%, (41.85±25.29)%, and (39.92±25.76)%, respectively. The fungal clearance rates at the end of treatment and 3 months after treatment were 56.60% and 64.15%, respectively. Compared with before treatment, the differences in the affected nail area and fungal clearance rate at the end of treatment and 3 months after treatment were statistically significant (P<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the end of treatment and 3 months after treatment in terms of the affected nail area and fungal clearance rate. During the treatment process, occasional sensations of heat and transient mild pain occurred. Conclusion CO2 fractional laser can effectively treat onychomycosis, especially mild to moderate cases, with few adverse reactions, and is worth promoting in clinical practice.
