Mechanisms of Azole Resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus
Abstract:Aspergillus fumigatus is an important opportunistic fungal pathogen, mainly colonizing the respiratory tract of humans and causing a series of diseases depending on the host's underlying immune status. It is the most common causative agent of invasive aspergillosis. Azole drugs are recommended as the first-line treatment for Aspergillus fumigatus infections. However, with the frequent use of azole antifungal agents in clinical settings and environmental azole fungicides, the number of clinical and environmental isolates of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus has increased worldwide, making the treatment of infections caused by resistant strains a challenge. This review summarizes the mechanisms of azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus, which involve the cyp51 gene, drug efflux pumps, biofilm formation, stress responses, and other related signaling pathways.
