Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy( TPF) in advanced hypopharyn-geal cancer and observe the differences in the saving of laryngeal function between two groups. Methods Diag-nosed as squamous cell carcinoma of hypopharynx by pathological method, 46 patients were arranged into two groups and were analyzed from Dec. 2006 to Feb. 2013. While operation group was treated by surgery and radio-therapy, experimental group was treated by chemotherapy, surgery plus radiotherapy. Surgical progress, phona-tion and swallow condition were analyzed and evaluated between two groups. Results 13 patients were arranged into operation group, 33 patients were arranged into the experimental group, and all the tumors received com-plete excision and achieved negative margins. 24 patients in experimental group retained the function of the lar-ynx and the organ-saving rate is 72. 7%;11 patients in the operation group lost their organs and only 2 patients retained the function of the larynx. The experimental group remained significantly high level of organ saving than operation group. There is no obvious difference of eating and swallowing with MTF scores between two groups. Conclusions In the treatment of advanced hypopharynx cancer, neoadjuvant chemotherapy ( TPF) followed by surgery and radiotherapy is helpful to improve the laryngeal function preservation rate and life quality.
