Abstract:Objective To explore the feasibility , safety, efficacy and the experience of small incision extra-capsular cataract extraction ( ECCE) combined with intraocular lens ( IOL) implantation in advanced aged patients with cataract in primary hospital .Methods Small incision ECCE and IOL implantation were performed for 43 cases (52 eyes) of cataract with age more than 90 years old.The analgesia effect, the safety of operation and the clinical effects were analyzed .Results All the 43 cases ( 52 eyes ) of cataract underwent the surgery successfully , and the postoperative vision improved well .The corrected vision at one week after operation were ≥0.5 in 37 eyes(71.2%), 0.1~0.3 in 10 eyes(19.2%), and 0.05~0.08 in 5 eyes(9.6%).No serious complications such as retinal de-tachment , endophthalmitis , corneal endothelium decompensation and IOL dislocation were found .Conclusion Small incision ECCE combined with IOL implantation can be effectively and safely performed on advanced aged cataract pa -tients with appropriate indications in primary hospital , because of its fast wound healing , minor postoperative reac-tion, low postoperative astigmatism , easily handled and low costs .
