Barriers to prevention of non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents by psychiatric nurses in open wards:a qualitative study

Abstract:Objective To understand the obstacles to preventing non-suicidal self-injury(NSSI)in adolescents by psychiatric nurses in open wards.Methods Sixteen clinical nurses working in open wards of Qingdao Mental Health Center were selected by purposive sampling method.They were given semi-structured interviews using the Vincent clinical event analysis model and the descriptive qualitative research method.Then the data were analyzed by using the content analysis method.Results 7 themes were extracted in this study:lack of industry standards for open psychiatric ward management,the management model of open psychiatric wards increasing the difficulty of controlling dangerous goods,difficulties in coordinating patient rights with ward management systems,insufficient risk prediction abilities of nurses,the complex psychological motivations behind patients'self-harm behaviors increasing nursing challenges,poor patient compliance with treatment,and negligence in family supervision.Conclusion The health administration department should improve industry standards.The nursing managers should innovate risk control measures,enhance the training system for psychiatric nurses,and strengthen health education for patients and their families,in order to reduce self-injurious behavior among adolescents with NSSI in open psychiatric wards.
