A qualitative study on the work experience of nurses in unaccompanied wards

Abstract:Objective To explore the real experiences and feelings of nurses working in the unaccompanied ward,aiming to provide a reference for implementation of unaccompanied care ward in China.Methods Using purposive sampling method,a semi-structured interview was conducted among 13 nurses in three grade-A tertiary hospitals in Hunan province that have provided unaccompanied ward service between August and September 2024.The data were analysed using the Colaizzi 7-step analysis method.Results Three themes were extracted including benefits of conducting unaccompanied ward services,the multiple pressures and challenges and the need for multi-resource guarantee and support in its practice.Conclusion The implementation of unaccompanied wards,for all its pressures and challenges,has brought benefits to nurses and gained their support.Therefore,related human resource training,guidance of public opinion and policy support should be conducted to promote the smooth implementation of such wards.
