Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a modified anti-leakage enema device for elderly patients with fecal incontinence. Methods A total of 100 elderly patients with fecal incontinence and admitted to the department of general surgery and gastroenterology of First People's Hospital of Xiaogan City between March and December 2024 were enrolled and divided into an intervention group(n=50)and a control group(n=50)according to a random number table. The control group received conventional enema device, while the intervention group was treated with a self-developed modified anti-leakage enema device. The incidence of incontinence-associated dermatitis(IAD),enema fluid leakage, contamination of bedding and medical staff clothing were compared between the two groups. Results The intervention group showed significantly lower rates of IAD(x2=4.396,P=0.036),bedding contamination(x2=17.420,P<0.001),clothing contamination(x2=14.942,P<0.001)and the degree of enema fluid leakage(Z=3.183,P=0.001)compared to the control group. Conclusion The modified anti-leakage enema device effectively minimizes fluid leakage during colonic irrigation in elderly patients with fecal incontinence, demonstrating significant clinical value in skin protection.
