Abstract:Objective To investigate the current situation of needs for death education and empathy abilities among intern nursing students, and analyze the correlation between them,so as to provide references for carrying out death education for them. Methods A total of 316 intern nursing students were surveyed using a general information questionnaire, the Jefferson scale of physician empathy-nursing students(JSPE-NS),and the death education needs scale. Results The total scores of empathy ability and needs for death education were(96.65±9.30)and(175.80±15.67)points,respectively.Moreover,empathy ability was positively correlated with needs for death education(r=0.661,P<0.001).Meanwhile,educational background, internship duration, attitude towards nursing work, experience of patients' death, empathy, and emotional care were the influencing factors of their needs for death education(R2=0.717,adjusted R2=0.703,F=50.593,P<0.001).Conclusion The empathy ability of nursing interns needs to be improved, and they have a high demand for death education. Therefore,it is necessary to strengthen the understanding and application of empathy among nursing interns, and help them establish a correct view of life and death, actively facing the care of terminally ill patients and meeting the needs of nursing career development.
