Qualitative study on dietary management of maintenance hemodialysis patients for over 5 years

Abstract:Objective To observe daily dietary management of long-term maintenance hemodialysis(MHD),aiming to develop targeted interventions for such patients.Methods Fourteen MHD patients for over 5 years were selected using the purposive sampling and given face-to-face,semi-structured in-depth interviews.The data were collected,analyzed,summarized and extracted themes using the Nvivo 15.0 software.Results Two main themes and nine sub-themes were identified.Theme one was of the personal level,including the six sub-themes of gradual neglect of dietary management,the impact of dietary restrictions on life quality,difficulties in keeping a personal food log,negative emotions and dietary management during dialysis,the impact of impaired self-esteem on dietary management and the need for personalized dietary management.The second theme was of the social and family level,covering three sub-themes:the impact of medical cost burdens on dietary management,the importance of family support for dietary management and the impact of the effectiveness of information on dietary management.Conclusion MHD patients over 5 years face multiple challenges in dietary management,such as dietary restrictions,emotional fluctuations,economic pressure,and difficulties in obtaining information.The patients' compliance,support from their families and guidance from healthcare providers are needed to solve such problems and achieve better dietary management.
