The operating room nurses'assessment and management of preoperative anxiety behavior in children:a qualitative study

Abstract:Objective To explore the operating room nurses'evaluation and management of preoperative anxiety in children,and provide a basis for relieving preoperative anxiety and bettering prognosis.Methods Twenty-one operating room nurses were selected from Xinhua hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong university school of medicine using the convenience sampling and objective sampling.They were given semi-structured in-depth interviews.Then the data were analyzed using a six-stage thematic analysis.Results Three themes were extracted,including the assessment of preoperative anxiety in children,its management,and suggestions of improvement.Conclusion In the future,it is necessary to strengthen the professional training of nurses to improve their preoperative anxiety assessment,improve non-pharmacological interventions,and rationally use preoperative sedative drugs to ensure that children's preoperative anxiety is effectively managed.
