Quality study of social isolation experience in patients undergoing lung cancer chemotherapy

Abstract:Objective To explore the real experience of social isolation of lung cancer chemotherapy patients and provide references for supportive schemes.Methods From September to November 2023,fifteen lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and hospitalized in Henan provincial people's hospital were selected and conducted a semi-structured interview using the qualitative research method.Then,content analysis is used to summarize and extract themes.Results Three thems and eight sub-thems are summarized:deliberate social avoidance due to health-related issues(limitations of the disease itself and difficulties in social participation,concerns about health problems,as well as changes in appearance and image due to side effects),suffering from social isolation and discrimination(feeling isolated in social activities,being subjected to taboo and avoidance behaviors by others,as well as public misunderstanding and prejudice about lung cancer),expect social support(from family,friends and medical team,as well as professional psychological institutions and fellow patients).Conclusion Lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy,generally experience bad experience of social isolation.Therefore,medical staff should pay attention to the evaluation and intervention of their social isolation,strengthen the multi-dimensional social support,so as to relieve their social isolation and promote their social adaptation level.
