Abstract:Objective To explore the mental experience during the surgical treatment of elderly patients with hallux valgus, so as to provide a basis for their health education and psychological nursing. Methods Twelve elderly patients with hallux valgus undergoing surgeries between November 2016 and March 2017 were selected using the purposive sampling method and given semi-structured interviews. The data were collected using live recordings and analyzed using the Colaizzi seven-step analysis method. Results The psychological experience during the surgical treatment for elderly patients with hallux valgus can be grouped into 6 themes: the cognitive defect in their own illnesses, physiological and psychological discomfort resulting from the illness, disagreement with the surgery method, hesitation and anxiety when choosing the surgical treatment, worries during surgery, as well as confusion and expectation after surgery. Conclusions The knowledge about foot diseases should be publicized so that people can develop healthy living habits and take good care of their feet, and patients with hallux valgus will seek medical treatment without any delay. Moreover, medical staff should attach importance to the physical and mental health of such patients, communicating with them and providing them with information, medical and mental support, so as to promote their physical and mental health.
