Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of applying the modified ice compress on the postoperative swelling and pain of orthognathic patients. Methods Twenty-two patients with maxillofacial deformity and admitted to our department between August 2014 and March 2018 were selected and numbered according to the sequence of visits. The patients were divided into an observation group and a control group according to their even and odd numbers, each of 11. The control group was treated with the traditional ice compress, while the observation group was done using the modified ice compress. The degree of swelling and pain were compared between the two groups at different times after operation. Results One day after the operation, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in swelling (Z=-1.156, P=0.248). However, 3 and 7 days after the operation, the swelling of the observation group were significantly milder than those of the control group (Z=-1.993, P=0.046; Z=-2.078, P=0.038). One, two and three days after the operation, the pain of the observation was significantly lighter than that of the control group (Z=-2.092, P=0.036; Z=-2.078, P=0.038; Z=-2.268, P=0.023). Conclusion The modified ice compress is superior to the traditional ice compress in relieving postoperative swelling and pain of patients after the orthognathic surgery.
