Abstract:Objective To observe changes of the body mass index (BMI) of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients after their therapy and to clarity its clinic significance. Methods Sixty-five patients with CHF were measured their body weight and height to calculate BMI during their hospitalization. The clinical manifestations such as heart function grade and edema degree were recorded at their admission. Results The BMI decreased significantly at their discharge (t=9.083, P<0.001).The gap between the highest and lowest BMI of patients with Ⅳ-grade heart function was significantly higher than that of patients with Ⅱ-and Ⅲ-grade heart function(Z=3.655,P<0.001;Z=4.562,P<0.001).For patients with severe edema, the gap was higher than those of mild and medium edema, and that of the patients of edema was higher than that of people without edema. Conclusions The change of BMI can used to reflect the heart function of CHF patients.
