Abstract:[Abstract ] Objective To explore the clinical effect of early intermittent urethral catheterization in spinal cord injury (SCI)patients. Methods Totally 180 SCI patients with voiding dysfunction admitted to our hospital between May 2012 and 201 5 were selected and randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, each of 90.The control group was applied routine indwelling catheterization, while the observation group was provided with intermittent urethral catheterization for 4 weeks. Then the bladder capacity, residual urine, bacterial counts and patient satisfaction of the 2 groups were compared. Results After the treatment, the bladder capacity and patients'satisfaction (94.4%)of the observation group were higher than those in the control group, but the residual volume of the former was less than the latter. In the observation group,1 6.7%patients found bacteria in the urethral orifice, significantly higher than that in the control group (35.6%).Conclusions Early intermittent urethral catheterization can help SCI patients increase their bladder capacity, reduce the amount of residual urine and the infection of urinary tract.
