Abstract:[Abstract ] Objective To explore the effect of cleaning urethral orifice using different methods on reflective bladder dysfunction patients after spinal cord injury (SCI)with indwelling urinary catheters. Methods Totally 92 SCI patients with indwelling urinary catheter for reflective bladder dysfunction were randomly divided into a control group (n =46 )and an observation group (n =46).The control group was washed urethral orifices using 0.5% povidine iodine, while the observation group was used sterile water for injection .The incidence of bacteriurea, urinary tract infection, skin allergy in the urethral orifice,as well as burning pain were compared between the control and observation group. Results No significant differences were observed in the incidence of bacteriurea and urinary tract infections between the two groups at 3,7 to 10 and 14 days after placing the urinary catheter. In the observation group,4.35% and 8.70 % patients appeared skin allergy and burning pain in the urethral orifice, significantly lower than 10.87 % and 47.83 % of the control group. Conclusion Compared to 0.5% povidine iodine, periurithral cleaning with sterile water for injection doesn't increase the urinary tract infections significantly, but lowers the occurrence of the skin allergy and burning pain feeling.
