Improved method to prevent intraocular infection after cataract surgery

Abstract:Objective To study the effects of improved method in preventing intraocular infection after cataract surgery.Methods Patients with cataract surgeries in our hospital from January 2011 to December 2012 were set as group A,from January 2013 to December 2013 were set as group B,and from January 2014 to July 2014 were set as group C.All the patients were given eye wash with gentamicin at 20 minutes before entering the operation room.Group A was given 0.5% povidone iodine to disinfect the skin around the eyes after entering the operation room.Group B was given conj unctival sac instillation with 0.1%povidone iodine disinfection solution at 20 minutes before entering the operation room and 0.5%povidone iodine to disinfect the skin around the eyes after eye wash again after entering the operation room. Group C was given conjunctival sac instillation with 0.1% povidone iodine disinfection solution at 5 minutes before operation at the base of group B.The incidence of intraocular infection of 3 groups were compared.Results No patient in group C had eye infection after operation.Conclusions Cataract surgery with conjunctival sac instillation with 0.1% povidone iodine disinfection solution 2 times and 0.5%povidone iodine to disinfect the skin around eye can effectively prevent postoperative infection.
