Relationship between uncertainty in illness and coping style among patients with schizophrenia

Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between uncertainty in illness and coping style of patients with schizophrenia .Methods One hundred and fourteen patients who were in the rehabilitation stage were surveyed by Mishel′s uncertainty in illness scale and coping inventory for stressful situations .Results Most of the patients (92 .1% ) experienced moderate or above level of uncertainty in illness .Patients with schizophrenia seldom adopt task coping style ,and usually adopt avoiding style and emotional coping style .The uncertainty in illness had negative correlation to task coping style(r= -0 .243 ,P<0 .05)or avoiding coping style(r= -0 .263 ,P<0 .05) .There were positive correlations among emotional coping style and uncertainty in illness(r=0 .321 ,P<0 .01) . Conclusion There is a correlation between coping style and uncertainty in illness .Adopting task style and avoiding coping style might reduce the level of uncertainty in illness among patients with schizophrenia .
