Abstract:Objective To analyze the efficacy of the continuous irrigation system in otoscopy surgery for mastoid cholesteatoma. Methods Using a random number table method,60 eligible patients were numbered according to the order of consultation and randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the continuous irrigation otoscopy group(n=30)or the non-irrigation microscopy group(n=30).The operation time, dry ear time, postoperative pain score(Visual Analogue Scale,VAS),hearing improvement, and complication rates were compared between the two groups. Results The operation time in the continuous irrigation otoscopy group was(119.13±40.05)min,and(128.13±36.39)min in the non-irrigation microscopy group, showing no statistically significant difference(t=0.71,P>0.05).The dry ear time in the continuous irrigation otoscopy group was significantly shorter than that in the non-irrigation microscopy group[(7.96±2.53)weeks vs.(9.20±2.16)weeks,t=2.04,P<0.05],and the postoperative pain score was also significantly lower[(2.60±1.10)vs(3.47±1.07),t=3.09,P<0.01].There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in hearing improvement(air conduction threshold,air-bone gap)or complication rate(20.00%in the otoscopy group vs.16.67%in the microscopy group,χ2=0.22,P>0.05).Conclusion Continuous irrigation during otoscopic surgery for mastoid cholesteatoma is less invasive, less painful, faster recovery, more effective and safer.
