Liang Tsong Taï's Thought of Making Medicine for Benefiting Mankind from the Perspective of Guiqian Theory
Luo Ying-qi
Abstract:Liang Tsong Taï returned to Baise in his middle age and began to turn from poetry to herbal medicine. He developed herbal remedies, such as Lusu Tincture and Ning Shen, and distributed these medicines free of charge to save lives.By the theory of literary Guiqian theory,Liang Tsong Taï's approach to both reclusive and pharmaceutical medicine reflects a broader philosophical perspective aimed at helping the world. This medical turn reveals its roots in poetry, transcending mere literary expression to embody a profound humanistic concern. For Liang Tsong Taï,poetry and medicine share a common origin, influenced not only by his father's teachings on poetry and herbal medicine but also by the spirit of Chinese humanism and the harmony between heaven and earth. Moreover, poetry and medicine follow a similar path, both striving for survival in a chaotic world.Literature seeks to save the nation through ideological emancipation, while medicine aims to save the people through industrial development.Ultimately, poetry and medicine also share a common joy, which vividly reflects Liang Tsong Taï's state of happiness in his later years.Liang Tsong Taï's poetry and medicine, which reflect the Chinese humanistic tradition that views poetry and medicine as originating from the same source, remind us that even in today's era of specialized disciplines, anthropology, literature, and medicine remain interconnected.
