Abstract:Background A positive doctor-patient relationship is the shared aspiration of medical professionals and patients alike.Recently, the"Life Has Pain, but Apricot(apricot metaphor doctor)Brings Warmth"joint tree-planting initiative has quietly emerged as a novel form of expressing gratitude toward healthcare providers. Objective To establish a scientific pathway for public low-carbon health actions by quantifying carbon emissions from medical activities and their corresponding carbon sequestration through tree planting. This initiative aims to uphold the medical humanistic spirit of"Warmth in an Apricot Forest"from traditional Chinese culture.By transforming the abstract concept of carbon neutrality into tangible, participatory carbon-inclusive practices through the humanistic appeal of joint tree planting,it embodies the principle that"lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets."Methods The main components of the medical carbon footprint were categorized and refined.Calculations were performed based on major carbon emission sources such as inpatient medical behaviors, diagnostic and treatment procedures, and transportation, leading to the formulation of a total medical carbon emission estimation formula.Tree planting was then adopted as the primary carbon offset method to construct a calculation formula for the relationship between the number of trees planted and carbon sequestration. Results The concept and calculation method of the"medical green carbon index(MGCI)"were explicitly proposed, quantifying the relationship between medical carbon emissions and arboreal carbon sequestration. Conclusion Joint participation by doctors and patients in low-carbon practices offers an innovative approach to green healthcare development. This innovative practice in medical humanities helps propel the mutual reinforcement of the"Healthy China"and"Beautiful China"initiatives.
