Effects of megestrol acetate combined with ondansetron on chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal reactions in breast cancer patients

Abstract：Objective To investigate the additional benefits and safety of adding megestrol acetate capsules to the standard triple antiemetic regimen(ondansetron,NK-1 receptor antagounist,dexamethasone)for controlling chemotherapy-relat-ed gastrointestinal symptoms in breast cancer patients.Methods A total of 120 breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University between January 2022 and December 2024 were retrospectively analyzed.Based on the antiemetic regimen,patients were divided into two groups:the triple-therapy group(n=60)received the standard triple regi-men,while the quadruple-therapy group(n=60)received the standard triple regimen combined with megestrol acetate capsules for 5 days.The gastrointestinal symptom control rate,quality of life scores,serum albumin and serotonin levels,and drug safety were compared between the two groups.Results After treatment,the Karnofsky Performance Status Score and the Func-tional Living Index-Emesis scores in the quadruple-therapy group were superior to those in the triple-therapy group((79.68±5.46)points vs(74.42±6.83)points,t=4.660,P<0.05;(108.53±7.34)points vs(95.27±9.16)points,t=8.750,P<0.05).In terms of serological indicators,the quadruple-therapy had higher albumin levels((37.92±4.63)g/L vs(35.76±4.15)g/L)and lower 5-hydroxytryptamine levels((203.62±35.73)ng/mL vs(226.53±41.63)ng/mL)(t=2.691,3.235,both P<0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups(10.00%(6/60)vs 6.67%(4/60))(χ2=0.436,P>0.05).Conclusion For breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy,adding megestrol acetate capsules to the standard triple antiemetic regimen can more effectively control nausea,vomiting,and anorexia,improve quality of life and nutri-tional status,without increasing safety risks.
