Effect of tropisetron combined with dexamethasone on the prevention and treatment of perioperative nausea and vomiting in anesthesia patients undergoing thoracic and abdominal surgery

Abstract：Objective To observe the effect of tropisetron combined with dexamethasone on the prevention and treatment of perioperative nausea and vomiting(PONV)in anesthesia patients undergoing thoracic and abdominal surgery.Methods A total of 158 patients who planned to undergo thoracic and abdominal surgery in the Department of Anesthesiology of First Hospital of Qinhuangdao from December 2022 to March 2024 were enrolled in the study and randomly divided into the control group(79 cases)and the observation group(79 cases).The patients in the control group were treated with tropisetron monotherapy to prevent PONV,while the patients in the observation group were treated with tropisetron combined with dexamethasone.The data such as general demographic information,the incidence of postoperative PONV,the recuperation of gastrointestinal functionality,and the occurrence of adverse events were observed and compared between the two groups.Results The incidences of nausea(8.86%(7/79))and vomiting(12.66%(10/79))of the observation group were both lower than those of the control group(20.25%(16/79),25.32%(20/79))(Z=4.122,4.115,both P<0.05).The borborygmus recovery time of the observation group was shorter than that of the control group((10.29±2.89)h vs(13.15±3.06)h,t=2.58,P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the total incidence of adverse reactions between the control group and the observation group(10.13%(8/79),16.46%(13/79),χ2=1.373,P=0.241).Conclusion The ad-ministration of tropisetron combined with dexamethasone can effectively mitigate the occurrence of PONV in the anesthesia patients undergoing thoracic and abdominal surgery,without eliciting adverse reactions,and it has good clinical application value.
