Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of bromhexine as an adjuvant treatment on clinical symptoms and immune func-tion in patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia(SCAP).Methods A total of 112 SCAP patients admitted to the Third People's Hospital of Xindu District,Chengdu from June 2019 to August 2023 were enrolled and randomly divided into the control group and the experimental group, with 56 cases in each group. The control group received antibiotic therapy and symptomatic treat-ment,while the experimental group was additionally treated with bromhexine on the basis of the control group. The improvement of symptoms, inflammatory indicators, immune markers, and the incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results The experimental group showed shorter durations of fever, cough, dyspnea, pulmonary rales, mechanical ventila-tion,and hemodynamic stabilization than the control group(t=5.519,6.207,5.448,4.722,2.672,2.868,all P<0.05).After treatment, the levels of procalcitonin, white blood cell count, neutrophil count, neutrophil ratio,interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein in the experimental group were(0.46±0.12)μg·L-1,(10.62±0.37)×109·L-1,(8.09±0.76)×109·L-1,(79.33±2.94)%,(119.33±3.48)pg·L-1 and(11.72±1.23)mg·L-1,lower than(0.84±0.15)μg·L-1,(11.38±0.52)×109·L-1,(9.96±1.24)×109·L-1,(80.63±3.42)%,(121.20±2.86)pg·L-1 and(12.42±1.11)mg·L-1 in the control group;there were statistically significant differences between the two groups(t=14.804,8.911,9.622,2.157,3.107,3.162,all P<0.05).After treatment, the levels of immunoglobulin G,immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin M were(15.95±3.64)g·L-1,(1.62±0.35)g·L-1 and(1.55±0.41)g·L-1 in the experimental group, higher than(14.61±3.47)g·L-1,(1.41±0.40)g·L-1 and(1.39±0.31)g·L-1 in the control group;there were statistically significant differences between the two groups(t=1.994,2.957,2.329,all P<0.05).The incidence of adverse reactions was 14.29%(8/56)in the experimental group and 12.50%(7/56)in the control group, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups(χ2=0.077,P=0.781).Conclusion Bromhexine as an adjuvant treatment for SCAP can improve clinical symptoms, reduce inflammatory response and promote the recovery of immune function, demonstrating favorable safety profile.
