Pharmaceutical care on a child with febrile neutropenia caused by chemotherapy

Abstract:One case of 1-year-old boy diagnosed as neuroblastoma 3 weeks ago was admitted to hospital. After admission, the patient was treated with the first cycle chemotherapy including vincristine, cyclophosphamide, pharmorubicin. Five days later, he developed mental distress and fever (38.2℃) with obviously low level of WBC, neutrophils, hemoglobins and platelets. He was diagnosed as febrile neutropenia after chemotherapy and was given ceftriaxone sodium and ribavirin for anti-infection, recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) to increase the number of WBC and neutrophils, recombinant human interleukin-11 (rhIL-11) to increase the number of platelets. Clinical pharmacists carried out pharmaceutical care during the whole treatment, including risk evaluation before chemotherapy, giving rational use advices of antibiotics, rhG-CSF and rhIL-11 according to guidelines for ferile neutropenic patients. After comprehensive treatment, the patient was in stable condition and discharged.
