One case of hypokalemic periodic paralysis induced by methylprednisolone sodium succinate for injection

Abstract:One 32-year-old male patient with Graves ophthalmopathy was hospitalized for hormone shock therapy. Methylprednisolone sodium succinate 600 mg was given to the patient intravenously on the fourth day admission. The patient developed the whole body numbness, muscle weakness. Blood biochemical test showed blood potassium was 1.75 mmol·L-1. The symptom improved after potassium supplement and the blood potassium increased to 5.28 mmol·L-1 the next day. Methylprednisolone sodium succinate 500 mg was given to the patient intravenously again on the 9th day. Five minutes later, the patient felt double lower limbs weakness and then developed activity obstacle, unable to stand and walk. Acute blood biochemical test showed blood potassium was 2.55 mmol·L-1. Methylprednisolone sodium succinate was stopped and potassium supplement treatment was given to the patient. The symptom improved and the blood potassium increased to 4.14 mmol·L-1.
