Pharmaceutical care on a patient with neurocysticercosis

Abstract:One 49-year-old male patient was admitted to hospital mainly because of distending pain of head and weakness of both lower extremities for 3 days. His clinical diagnosis was cerebral cysticercosis. After hospitalization, the patient received the anti-epileptic therapy with carbamazepine tablets and phenobarbital and sodium bromide tablets, mannitol injection and glycerin and fructose injection for reducing cranial hypertension, anti-inlfammatory therapy with dexamethasone sodium phosphate injection. Omeprazole enteric-coated capsules were used to prevent the occurrence of stress ulcer, albendazole tablets and praziquantel tablets were used for anti-cysticercosis treatment. Clinical pharmacists supervised the entire treatment in order to optimize the therapeutic regimen by selecting more appropriate anti-cysticercosis medications and anti-epileptic medications. Moreover, the potential adverse drug reactions like blood glucose abnormality, liver function abnormality and renal insufifciency were monitored regularly, and the patient was given medication education. The patient was in a stable condition and discharged on the 30th day.
