Abstract:As a systemic bone metabolic disorder, osteoporosis is characterized by the decrease in bone mineral density (BMD), damage of microstructure and variation in bone fragility, leading to increased risk of fractures. Recently, more and more commonly prescribed medications that can induce bone loss, fractures and drug-induced osteoporosis (DIO) were discovered, such as glucocorticoids, thyroxin, thiazolidinediones and proton pump inhibitors. This paper focuses on some of the widely used medications associated with DIO risk, and reviews the pathogenic mechanism, current researches and prevention and treatment of DIO.
