Discussion about the controversy of the efficacy and safety of glucosamine in the treatment of osteoarthritis

Abstract：Osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent arthritis in our clinical practice, for which there are few effective treatment methods. Osteoarthritis commonly involves in lower limb joint, spine and small joint with both hands, leads to joint deformity, which has serious inlfuence on the vital function of the patients. Glucosamine has been found to be effective in relieving osteoarthritis symptoms and ameliorating the destroy of joint structure. However, several literature published in recent years showed that glucosamine was no more effective than placebo for osteoarthritis treatments. Our purpose is to retrospectively analyze the pharmacological mechanism, efifcacy and safety of glucosamine. The results of this review showed implicative and positive prospects for glucosamine in the managements of osteoarthritis.
