Propylthiouracil-induced hypersensitivity syndrome and pancreatitis

Abstract:One case of 21-year-old male patient with hyperthyroidism was admitted to the hospital, who had no previous medical history and drinking history. After admission the patient was given propylthiouracil (10 mg, tid). The patient developed rash, fever and liver dysfunction after 23 days with the treatment. The condition improved after stopping drug, as well as antiallergic and hepatoprotective treatment for 5 days. But the patient had fever, rash, severe liver dysfunction again after reuse of propylthiouracil for 1 day, and ALT was 407.9 IU·L-1. The patient developed acute pancreatitis 4 days after the withdrawal of propylthiouracil. Through antiallergic, hepatoprotective and symptomatic treatment for 27 days, the condition improved.
