Abstract:Objective To discuss the relationship among sleep quality, sleep duration and diabetes in elderly patients. Methods The patients aged ≥80(n=1 12)were chosen, and among them there 37 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM group)and 75 without T2DM(control group). The sleep status was surveyed face-to-face by using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),and basic data, conditions of chronic diseases and indexes of blood sugar and blood fat were collected in 2 groups. The relationship among sleep quality, sleep duration and diabetes was reviewed by using Logistic regression model. Results In comparison in sleep quality between 2 groups, the differences in the total score of PSQI,sleep quality, sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep disorder, hypnotics and scores of daytime dysfunction index had statistical significance(P<0.05).The differences in complicated diabetes history, length of night sleep and the total sleep duration had statistical significance in groups with difference sleep quality(P<0.05).The differences in age, complicated diabetes history, levels of total cholesterol(TC)and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol(LDL-C),sleep latency, the total sleep duration and PSQI scores had statistical significance in groups with difference sleep durations(P<0.05).The results of Logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting confounding factors, the risk of diabetes was higher in elderly patients with poor sleep(scores ≥7)compared with that in those with good sleep(scores<7,OR=5.429,95%CI:1.34-21.998,P<0.05).The risk of diabetes was higher in elderly patients with sleep duration≥6 h was higher than that in those with sleep duration<6 h(OR=4.433,95%CI:1.78~11.038,P<0.05).After adjusting confounding factors, there was no significant correlation between diabetes risk and lack of sleep durationin elderly patients(OR=1.839,95%CI:0.401~8.436,P>0.05).Conclusion There is a correlation between lower sleep quality(scores≥ 7)and diabetes in elderly patients.
