Abstract:To investigate the level changes of interleukin-18 (IL-18) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) between patients with pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease (PH-LHD) and controls, and changes of IL-18 and BNP expressions before and after taken beraprost sodium. Methods From the patients (n=860) received routine examinations and treatment, PH-LHD patients (n=112, PH-LHD group) and normal volunteers (n=104, control group) were randomly chosen from Department of Cardiovascular Medicine of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hebei North University from May 2017 to May 2018. The level of pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PASP) were detected by using echocardiography in 2 groups, and then PH-LHD group mild-PH-LHD group, moderate-PH-LHD group and severe-PH-LHD group according to PH level reflected by echocardiography indexes. The expressions of IL-18 and BNP in peripheral blood were detected in all groups. In addition the PH-LHD group was divided into intervention group with beraprost sodium (intervention group) and non-intervention with beraprost sodium group (non-intervention group), and expressions of IL-18 and BNP were detected in these 2 groups. Results The expressions of PASP, IL-18 and BNP were significantly higher in PH-LHD group than those in control group (P<0.001). The expressions of IL-18 and BNP showed as severe-PH-LHD group>moderate-PH-LHD group>mild-PH-LHD group (P<0.001). After beraprost sodium intervention for from 7 d to 30 d, the total expressions of PASP, IL-18 and BNP showed a gradual descending trend. The total difference in the expressions of PASP, IL-18 and BNP was significant (P<0.001) among different interventional periods, but the difference was not significant in middle and late intervention periods (P>0.05). Conclusion After beraprost sodium intervention, the expression of IL-18 decreases significantly in PH-LHD patients, which indicates that beraprost sodium may be taken as a targeted drug in treatment of PH-LHD.
