Abstract:Objective To investigate the changes and clinical significance of levels of serum periostin, endothelin-1 (ET-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients with essential hypertension (EH). Methods EH patients (n=127, EH group) and healthy controls (n=40, control group) were chosen, and EH group was divided, according to hypertension grading, into group A (grade 1 hypertension, n=38), group B (grade 2 hypertension, n=47) and group C (grade 3 hypertension, n=42). The levels of serum ET-1, VEGF and periostin in samples collected from fast venous blood were detected by using ELISA in all groups. The carotid artery intima-media thickness (CA-IMT) was detected by using color Doppler ultrasonography. The correlation among all above indexes and blood pressure grading was analyzed. Results The levels of serum periostin, ET-1 and VEGF were all significantly higher in groups A, B and C than those in control group (all P<0.05), and they increased gradually as long with the level of blood pressure increased (all P<0.05). The CA-IMT was significantly higher in groups A, B and C than that in control group (all P<0.05) and was (0.86±0.11) mm in group A, (0.94±0.13) mm in group B and (1.07±0.18) mm in group C, and it increased gradually as long with the level of blood pressure increased (all P<0.05). The results of correlation analysis showed that the levels of serum periostin, ET-1 and VEGF were positively correlated to the level of blood pressure (r=0.762, r=0.714, r=0.803, all P<0.05). The levels of serum periostin, ET-1 and VEGF were positively correlated to CA-IMT (r=0.693, r=0.663, r=0.692, all P<0.05). Conclusion The levels of serum periostin, ET-1 and VEGF is positively correlated to the grade of blood pressure, and closely related to vessel injury degree and development of atherosclerosis, so they can be taken as important indexes in the treatment and prognosis of hypertension.
