Abstract:Objective To systematically summarize and evaluate the effect of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients based on the currently available evidence. Methods Electronic literatures of randomized controlled trial (RCT) of LLLT for treatment of hypertension were searched in the main Chinese and English medical databases from January 1, 1987 to December 31, 2016. The quality of the included literature was evaluated using the assessment tool of bias risk in Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 software, and RevMan 5.3 software was used for statistics and Meta-analysis.Results 6 trials involving 417 patients were included (208 in the LLLT group, 209 in the control group). The results of Meta-analyses showed that: (1) two placebo-controlled trials were statistically pooled: LLLT significantly reduced both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by 11.31 mmHg (95%CI: -17.93~-4.68) and 6.77 mmHg (95%CI: -7.81~-5.73);(2) LLLT against antihypertensive medication: the effect of antihypertensive medication is superior to LLLT alone;however, after given with antihypertensive medication, LLLT significantly improved MAP (MD=-21.00 mmHg, 95%CI: -27.73~-14.27); (3) LLLT against unconventional treatments: there were significant improvements in SBP change (MD=-1.97 mmHg, 95%CI: -3.81~-0.13), DBP change(MD=-1.22 mmHg, 95%CI: -1.88~-0.57) and MAP change (MD=-1.39 mmHg, 95%CI: -2.03~-0.75).Conclusion LLLT is effective for lowering blood pressure in hypertension. However, due to the limited number and low methodological quality of included studies, rigorously designed RCTs are needed to confirm the conclusions.
