Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of puerarin on myocardial injury in diabetic rats and to analyze its possible mechanism. Methods Diabetic rats were induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ). .Forty diabetic rats were randomly divided into four groups: the model group (n=10); low puerarin group (40 mg/kg, n=10); medium puerarin group (80 mg/kg,n=10); high puerarin group (160 mg/kg,n=10). Rats in normal control groups were given normal diet. Blood glucose and troponin I (cTnI) were measured before administration, after administration for 4 weeks and 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were measured by myocardial tissue. Results Puerarin has hypoglycemic effect, high puerarin group treatment effect is obvious (P<0.05). The cTnI level of model group was higher than that of other groups after 16 weeks of high glucose diet (P<0.05). High puerarin group cTnI than the model group decreased significantly (P<0.05). The concentration of MDA in myocardial tissue of model group was significantly increased, SOD was decreased, and change of high puerarin group was most obvious. Conclusion Puerarin has a protective effect on myocardial injury in diabetic rats, and its mechanism may play an important role in alleviating myocardial oxidative stress.
