Abstract:Objective To investigate the value of peripheral blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in reviewing the damage severity of cardiac function in patients with heart failure (HF).Methods The patients with HF (n=195) were chosen from the Cardiac Center of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Dalian University from Jan. 2014 to Dec. 2015. The blood routine test and echocardiogram were conducted, and NLR, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and NT-proBNP were calculated. The correlation among NLR, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), NT-proBNP and heart function classification of New York Heart Association (NYHA) was analyzed by using correlation analysis method. The patients were divided, according to NLR level, into group 1 (NLR>2.632) and group 2 (NLR<2.632), and the baseline conditions, LVEF and NT-proBNP were compared between 2 groups. The patients were also divided, according to NYHA, into NYHA class Ⅲ group and NYHA classⅣ group, and the baseline conditions, LVEF and NT-proBNP were compared between 2 groups. Results The results of correlation analysis showed that NLR was positively correlated to NT-proBNP (r=0.435,P=0.006) and NYHA (r=0.368,P=0.021), and NLR was negatively correlated to LVEF (r=-0.438,P=0.005). As NLR increased, NT-proBNP (P=0.007) and NYHA (P=0.013) also increased significantly, and LVEF (P=0.095) had no significant change. As NYHA increased, NLR (P=0.036) and NT-proBNP (P=0.005) also increased gradually, and LVEF (P=0.033) decreased significantly. Conclusion The higher the peripheral blood NLR level is, the poorer the heart function is in patients with HF.
