Value of carotid ultrasonography in cardiovascular disease

Abstract：Objective To investigate value of carotid ultrasonography in screening for cardiovascular disease. Methods 120 patients with cardiovascular disease in Xuancheng Central Hospital from January 2013 to December 2015 were selected as hypertension group, coronary heart disease group, the stroke group, and hyperlipidemia group. 50 healthy objects from the same period were selected as control group. Carotid ultrasonography was conducted among all groups. Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), positive rate of IMT, positive rate of atherosclerotic plaque in different types of disease, IMT of different parts were measured.Results IMT of hypertension group, coronary heart disease group, the stroke group, hyperlipidemia group, were (0.82±0.11)mm, (0.84±0.15)mm, (0.90± 0.13)mm, (0.87±0.11)mm respectively, which was significantly higher than control group (0.44±0.03mm,P<0.05). Positive rate of IMT in hypertension group, coronary heart disease group, the stroke group, hyperlipidemia group, were 84.21%, 80.00%, 77.27% and 75.00%, which was significantly higher than control group (45.00%,P<0.05). Positive rate of atherosclerotic plaque in hypertension group, coronary heart disease group, the stroke group, hyperlipidemia group, were 78.95%, 75.00%, 72.73%, 70.00% respectively, which was significantly higher than control group (20.00%,P<0.05).Conclusion The clinical application of the carotid ultrasonography can be helpful for cardiovascular disease screening.
