Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between carotid plaques with coronary artery stenosis by carotid ultrasound and coronary arteriography.Method 105 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) were divided into normal group (n=15) and diseased group (n=90) according to result of coronary angiography. According to the degree of pathological changes, patients of diseased group were divided into mild lesion group (n=18), moderate lesions (n=40) and severe lesion group (n=32). Area and number of carotid plaques, and intima media thickness (IMT) were exanimated using carotid artery ultrasound. Results Carotid plaques were detected in 80 patients among 105 patients, including 6 patients from normal group (40.0%) and 72 patients from diseased group (80.0%). There were 49 patients with carotid artery stenosis: 18 of them were mild stenosis; 22 of them were moderate stenosis; 9 of them were severe stenosis. Area and number of carotid plaques, and IMT of diseased group were all significantly higher than normal group (P<0.05). Furthermore, they were increased along with the degree of lesion (allP<0.05). Rate of carotid artery stenosis was increased with the degree of coronary artery stenosis (P<0.05).Conclusion Carotid plaques are increased with the degree of coronary artery stenosis. Carotid ultrasound can be used to detect coronary artery disease.
