Abstract:Objective To investigate the changes of interleukin-37 (IL-37) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in patients with severe coronary artery calcification (CAC), and analyze the correlation between them. Methods The patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) undergone coronary CT angiography (n=100, male 67, female 33, aged from 38 to 80 and average age=62.17±9.68) were chosen from Jan. 2015 to Dec. 2015. All patients were divided, according to Agatston integrals, into severe CAC group (Agatston integrals≥400) and control group (Agatston integrals<400, each n=50). The changes of biochemical indexes and level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were detected in all patients, and levels of plasma IL-37 and OPG were detected by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results In severe CAC group, more patients had hypertension and higher level of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) compared with control group (all P<0.05). The difference in age, sex, body mass index and blood fat had no statistical significance between 2 groups (all P>0.05). The levels of IL-37 [(89.67±23.84) pg/ml vs. (65.65±24.74) pg/mL], OPG [(6.95±1.76) pg/mL vs. (5.88±1.48) pg/mL] and hs-CRP [(1.92±1.44) mg/L vs. (1.28±0.88) mg/L] were significantly higher in severe CAC group than those in control group (all P<0.01). The results of Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that IL-37 level was positively correlated respectively to OPG level (r=0.320, P=0.001) and hs-CRP level (r=0.489, P<0.001), and OPG level was positively correlated hs-CRP level (r=0.191, P=0.057). Conclusion The increase of levels of IL-37 and OPG in patients with severe CAC indicates that IL-37 level is closely related to the process of CAC. The deepened study on IL-37 level and CAC may provide a new target for monitoring and treating CAC.
