Abstract:Objective To discuss the characteristics of metabolic syndrome (MS) in male group at different age stages, and provide the evidence for prevention and treatment of MS.Methods The materials of 677 male officials with health examinations were retrospectively analyzed on May 2007, and divided, according to age, into 33-45 group, 46-55 group, 56-65 group and >65 group. The MS status and relevant indexes of MS were observed and characteristics of all indexes were analyzed in all groups. Results The total prevalence of MS was 23.78%in 677 male officials. The prevalence of elevated 2-hour postprandial blood glucose was 37.67%, overweight was 37.08%, hypertriglyceridemia was 31.17%, hypertension was 18.02%, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was 14.18%, and high fasting blood glucose was 11.37%. The incidence of MS was higher in all groups, and was the highest in 46-55 group (31.87%) and lowest in 33~45 group (17.53%). The incidence of MS was similar in 56~65 group and >65 group (P>0.05). The prevalence of overweight was the highest in 33-45 group (32.47%) and 56~65 group (38.42%), that of hypertriglyceridemia was the highest in 46~55 group (46.15%), and that of elevated 2-hour postprandial blood glucose was the highest in >65 group (57.93%).Conclusion The prevalence of MS is higher in the male group in this study. The risk age range is from 46 to 55, and overweight and hypertriglyceridemia are major risk factors of early MS. Dysglycemia and hypertension are main symptoms of late MS. Health management should be strengthened to help officials to prevent MS and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases effectively.
