Abstract:Objective To observe the short-term and long-term curative effects and complications in elderly patients aged over 75 with diabetes after implanting permanent cardiac pacemakers. Methods The elderly patients aged over 75 implanting permanent cardiac pacemakers (n=89) were chosen from Jan. 2005 to Dec. 2013, and then divided into diabetes group (n=38) and non-diabetes group (n=51). The complications after implantation and long-term curative effect were followed up and recorded in 2 groups. Results The success rate was 100%in both groups, and average follow-up period was over 5 y. The incidence of complications including electrode dislocation and pocket infection had no statistical difference between 2 groups (P>0.05). There were no amaurosis and syncope observed during follow-up and a few patients had palpitation and tachycardia. The quality of live was improved in 98.9%patients. Conclusion The elderly patients with diabetes can accept implantation of permanent cardiac pacemaker like those without diabetes when the level of plasma glucose is controlled strictly.
