Abstract:Objective To investigate and analyze the influence of potassium supplement on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in hypertensive patients at different ages. Methods The hypertensive patients (n=368, aged from 18 to 85) without abnormal kidney function and cardiovascular diseases were chosen from Mar. 2011 to Oct. 2012, and divided into elderly group and middle-aged and young group bounded by 60 years old. And then 2 groups were randomly divided into potassium supplement subgroup and control subgroup. The level of blood pressure was strictly controlled according to guideline. The incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events was analyzed in all subgroups after 1 y.Results In elderly group, the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events was lower in potassium supplement subgroup than that in control subgroup (P<0.05). In middle-aged and young group, the incidence of cardiovascular events had no difference between potassium supplement subgroup and control subgroup (P>0.05), and incidence of cerebrovascular events was lower in potassium supplement subgroup than that in control subgroup (P<0.05).Conclusion Potassium supplement can effectively reduce the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in elderly hypertensive patients and reduce the incidence of cerebrovascular events in middle-aged and young hypertensive patients.
