Distribution characteristics of homocysteine level in population in Taiyuan City

Abstract：Objective To analyze the distribution characteristics of homocysteine (Hcy) level in community population and physical examination population in Taiyuan City of Shanxi Province. Methods From Mar. 2012 to Sept. 2012, community group (n=5092, male 1076 and female 4016) was chosen from Balingqiao Community and physical examination group (n=4323, male 2824 and female 1499) was chosen from the Physical Examination Center of the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University. The indexes of Hcy, plasma glucose, blood fat, blood pressure (BP) and body mass index (BMI) were detected in 2 groups, and distribution of Hcy level at different age stages and 2 groups were analyzed. Results Compared with community group, the percentage of hypertensive cases and Hcy level decreased in physical examination group (all P<0.05). Hcy mostly distributed from 10μmol/L to 20μmol/L at all age stages. The distribution of cases with Hcy level from 10μmol/L to 20μmol/L at all age stages in community group showed as follows:≤35 (50.3%), 35~45 (50.9%), 45~55 (42.2%), 55~65 (52.4%) and>65(58.1%). The distribution of age at difference stages showed as follows:≤35 (46.2%), 35~45 (50.5%), 45~55(43.7%), 55~65 (51.3%) and>65 (51.9%) in community group. The percentage of cases with Hcy≤10μmol/L increased in non-hypertensive cases than that in hypertensive cases (12.2%vs. 5.8%), and percentage of cases with Hcy from 20 μmol/L to 30 μmol/L decreased (13.9% vs. 19.8%, all P<0.01) in community group. The percentage of cases with Hcy≤10μmol/L increased in non-hypertensive cases than that in hypertensive cases (20.7%vs. 14.6%, all P<0.01) in physical examination group. Hcy level was positively correlated to BUA level (r=0.144, P<0.05) in community group and in physical examination group (r=0.131, P<0.05). Conclusion Hcy level is from 10μmol/L to 20μmol/L at all age stages in most community population and physical examination population in Taiyuan City of Shanxi Province, and percentage of cases with Hcy≤10μmol/L increases in non-hypertensive cases than that in hypertensive cases.
