Expression level of galectin-3 in patients with heart failure after myocardial infarction

Abstract：Objective To observe the expression level of galectin-3 (Gal-3) in patients with heart failure after myocardial infarction (MI). Methods The patients (n=60) were divided into old MI group and non-MI group (each n=30) according to their medical history. The cardiac structure and heart function were reviewed by using echocardiogram, and level of plasma Gal-3 was detected by using ELISA. The difference in Gal-3 level was compared between 2 groups and correlation between Gal-3 level and LVEF was analyzed. Results The expression level of Gal-3 was significantly higher in old MI group than that in non-MI group [(28.88±9.78) ng/mL vs. (22.57± 4.59) ng/mL, P<0.05]. LVEF was significantly lower in old MI group than that in non-MI group [(51.38±9.75)%vs. (58.90±4.62)%, P<0.05]. The expression level of Gal-3 was positively correlated to left atrial diameter (r=0.612, P<0.01) and negatively correlated to LVEF (r=-0.389, P<0.05). Conclusion The expression level of Gal-3 is higher in ACS patients, which is positively correlated to left atrial diameter and negatively correlated to LVEF.
