Abstract:Objective To give health education to elderly patients with hyperlipidemia for introducing relevant knowledge, correcting bad life habits and reducing blood fat level. Methods The patients with hyperlipidemia (n=470, male 433 and female 37) aged from 60 to 94 (average age=75.66±4.77) were chosen from retired cadres of the Chinese PLA Beijing Military Area Command in Apr. 2006. The data about age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking, drinking and high-salt diet (≥6 g/d) was collected, and the level of blood fat was detected in all patients. All patients were given health education including relative disease knowledge, diet guidance, exercise guidance and psychological guidance. Results After health education, the percentage of patients mastering relative disease knowledge over 85 scores increased, percentage of patients persisting in medicine taking increased and percentage of smoking and drinking patients decreased. Before health education, TC level was (5.54±0.91) mmol/L, LDL-C level was (3.59±0.75) mmol/L, and HDL-C level was (1.28±0.78) mmol/L in the patients. Until the end of health education, TC level decreased (4.52±0.83) mmol/L, LDL-C decreased (2.49±0.61) mmol/L, and HDL-C increased (1.40±0.33) mmol/L (all P<0.01). Conclusion Health education can help the elder to develop good life habits, relieve dependency, and reduce effectively level of blood fat.
